Association of Pharmaceutical and Medical Economy

The total gross value added (GVA) generated by Pharmaceutical and medical economy was around 3.0 billion EUR in 2023, which is the 4.6% of total GVA of the country and 3.9% of Serbia’s GDP. Observed by activities, around 2.6 billion EUR created by human health activities (88.9%). The other activities have a negligible contribution. From 2019 to 2023, GVA share of pharmaceutical and medical economy in total GVA and GDP of the Republic of Serbia shows stable trend.

Export of pharmaceutical products in 2024 amounted to 441.3 million EUR which is the 1.5% of total export but export of these products are slightly higher than previous year by 1.4%. This industry is hiring 152.9 thousand of workers (6.6% of total employment) while the most are employed in human health services (137.3 thousand). In pharmaceutical industry in 2023 was operating 147 active companies and 6.4 thousand of entrepreneurs which is in total 6.5 thousand.
