In 2022, the Electronic Communications and Information Society sector generated a total gross value added (GVA) of 3.4 billion EUR, which accounts for 6.6% of the total GVA of the country and 5.6% of Serbia's GDP. The majority of this value-added, around 1.5 billion EUR (45.1%), was created by computer programming, consultancy, and related activities, while telecommunications generated around 1.1 billion EUR (34.3%). From 2017 to 2020, the GVA share of this sector in the overall GVA and GDP of Serbia showed a slightly growing trend, but from 2020, it has been declining.
Despite the negative effects of the Ukrainian war, the export of goods related to electronic communications and information society amounted to 520.4 million EUR in 2023, which is 1.8% of the total export. However, this represents an 11.5% increase compared to the previous year. Additionally, the export of services in this sector reached 3.1 billion EUR from January to November 2023, accounting for 26.3% of the total services export.
This sector employs 128.5 thousand workers, which is 5.6% of the total employment in Serbia. The majority of the workers are employed in computer programming, consultancy, and related activities (64.9 thousand) and postal and courier activities (18.6 thousand). In 2023, there were 8.3 thousand active companies and 24.5 thousand entrepreneurs operating in the electronic communications and information society sector, bringing the total to around 32.8 thousand.
