The total gross value added (GVA) generated by Public utility industry was around 611.0 million EUR in 2023, which is the 1.0% of total GVA of the country and 0.8% of Serbia’s GDP. Observed by activities, nearly 377.0 million EUR created by waste collection, treatment and disposal activities; materials recovery (61.6%) and 212.0 million EUR by water collection, treatment and supply (34.7%). The other two activities have a negligible contribution. From 2017 to 2023, GVA share of public utility industry in total GVA and GDP of the Republic of Serbia shows stable trend.
Export of these products in 2024 amounted to 178.5 million EUR which is the 0.6% of total export and export of these products are a bit higher than 2023, by 7.3%. This sector of economy is hiring 36.0 thousand of workers (1.6% of total employment) while the most are employed in waste collection, treatment and disposal activities; materials recovery (19.3 thousand) and water collection, treatment and supply (16.0 thousand). In public utility industry in 2024 was operating nearly 1.0 thousand of active companies and 1.1 thousand entrepreneurs which is in total around 2.1 thousand.
