The total gross value added (GVA) generated by the Public utility industry was around 543.0 million EUR in 2021, which is 1.2% of the country's total GVA and 1.0% of Serbia’s GDP.
Observed by activities, nearly 318.4 million EUR was created by waste collection, treatment, and disposal activities; materials recovery (58.6%) and 219.8 million EUR by water collection, treatment, and supply (40.5%). The other two activities have a negligible contribution. From 2017 to 2021, the GVA share of the public utility industry in total GVA and GDP of the Republic of Serbia shows a slightly declining trend.
Export of these products in 2022 amounted to 203.4 million EUR which is 0.7% of total export and export of these products are lower than in 2021, by 5.5%. This sector of the economy is hiring 36.2 thousand workers (1.6% of total employment) while most are employed in waste collection, treatment, and disposal activities; materials recovery (19.9 thousand), and water collection, treatment, and supply (15.6 thousand). In the public utility industry in 2022 was operating 1.1 thousand active companies and 1.2 thousand entrepreneurs which is in total around 2.3 thousand.
